What is Web 3.0?

Lets all jump on another bandwagon here. We all joined the whole Web 2.0 game, being mostly social netwokring (myspace, technorati, digg) and the overuse of “AJAX” (asynchronous javascript and xml). It has hardly stepped foot out of the gates and already technology writers and investors are asking what the next internet is going to be like.

“The ‘always-on’ internet, combined with computers talking to computers, will be a more profound transformation of society than what we’ve seen so far.”
The Future of the Internet

Is web 2.0 really the second version of the internet? Will web 3.0 be the next evolution of online interactivity?

If you ask me, the next evolution in the online sector is going to be a lot like the last one. A lot of hype without a lot of output. I would think more of our operational systems and applications are going to be accessed online. I would assume we will dive into distributed processing and a common platform. However this may prove to be a more difficult task than it seems. With current software giants like Linux, Sun, Unix, M$ and Apple producing desktop operating systems, who would be the one to make this universal online operating system?
You can see some of this universality coming about on the current “web 2.0″ in online software such as Flickr, YouTube, OpenOffice, ThinkFree, Writely, among others. They are hosted online, with storage packages so you can access your files from all over the world.

So where can you find the best information on the future of the internet?

One Response to “What is Web 3.0?”

  1. Drake Says:

There will always be some programs that have to be done locally (think Photoshop). Even if someday we get enough bandwith that we can run a program like photoshop remotely, the standards for local power will have changed. Local computing power will always be ahead of what can be done on broadband. The standards for running photoshop will be higher and the internet will not be able to meet that demand.
